MANALI - DARCHA - BARALACHA-LA - PHIRTSE-LA - PADAM |

DAY 01: Manali - Darcha
Road leaves Manali and climbs upto the (3980M) Rohtang Pass
and then winds down into the Lahaul Valley. After leaving
Keylong (3347 M), the road winds through extensive fields
and occasional villages, along the river Bhaga. Camp set up
a little before the village Darcha. |

DAY 02: Darcha- Patseo
Passports checked at Darcha post. Stop at Sarai valley with
a small lake to the left of the road. A very good spot for
rest before lunch. Arrive at Patseo via Darcha village.
Night halt in inn. Reach Zingzingbar, then Mane Bar. |

|
|
Day 03: Campsite- Baralacha-La - Sarchu
Reach lake Suraj Tal, finally you are on a pasture and the
Baralacha-La cairn. There are two passes on Baralacha-la; to
the right of the east pass is Suruf lake and if weather
permits, 5000-6000 m peaks are visible. Sarchu bridge is a
good campsite for overnight stay. |

Day 04: Sarchu Bridge/Campsite-Lingti Ground
This is the easy part: you walk along the river bed and pass
through pastures. As the valley widens, a few shepherds huts
on the left can be seen. There is sand all around. Continue,
and after crossing 2 canyons, camp near the spring. |

Day 05: Lingti Ground- Khamerup- Phirtse-La
Today cross four canyons and after 2-3 hours cross a broad
river and climb to a plateau till you reach a river, which
comes from Chumickmarpho (4650M). About one hour's trek from
Shepherds' huts, continue upstream, on left bank. The base
camp for Phirtse-la is close by. |

Day 06: Campsite - Phirtse-La
Phirtse-la (the highest pass on the whole trek) is
reached in 4 hours. Follow path to the river. Another 2
hours of trek, reach campsite for night halt, around 100 m
above the river with beautiful landscape. You are on the
western slope. |

Day 07: Campsite - Tanza
Breathtaking view of Zanskar valley in front. By passing
behind a rocky bridge follow steep gorge, cross a stream.
Arrive in Tanza, the meeting point of Route 2 (via
Shingo-la). Tanza is a small village with a gompa in ruins.

Day 08: Tanza - Purne
Arrive at Kuru, a major village of livestock breeders.
Descending for about 2 1/2 hours arrive at beautiful
village, Teta. The trail continues downwards upto river.
From the left bank ascend the gentle slope upto Jal. Reach
Purne, for overnight camp. |

Day 09: Purne - Phuktal Gompa - Purne
From Purne, reach the Phuktal monastery. The monastery is
like a honeycomb, cut into a rock under a gignantic grotto.
The library, prayer rooms, kitchens, abbot's chamber,
chorten and the grave of Gangsem Sherap Sampo, who founded
Phuktal, Likir and Ringdom gompas, are all worth-seeing.

Day 10: Purne - Ichar
Go to Char village. After 2 hours is Kaydang - a village
full of poplar groves. Passing Hamuni and Surle villages,
the trail is rough and difficult for horses. After crossing
a large village, arrive at Ichar for overnight stay. |

Day 11: Ichar - Mone
Re-cross over the left bank of Tsarap river, climb before
crossing a major tributary bridge, now go on descending
towards Reru and after crossing a plain with wild flowers
(flowering in July-August), arrive at Mone. |

|
Day 12: Mone- Padam
From the monastery which is on a steep hill behind the town
is a route leading to the left to the 6150-la Pass, the
highest and most difficult pass in Zanskar. It involves
crossing a glacier. Cross Tema and reach Charmoche Kore
Camping ground. Other stops are Padam, Bardan Gompa, Kagyupa
monastery. |
